PRESS RELEASE: KARAPATAN-ST condemns illegal arrest and detention of two KADAMAY-ST leaders; slams CIDG for accusing the victims as NPA
After vehemently denying that the two Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (KADAMAY-ST) leaders were in their custody, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) stationed inside the Camp Vicente Lim compound eventually admitted last 08 February 2012 that Evelyn Legaspi and Pastora Latagan are detained in their camp. Legaspi, regional council member of KADAMAY-ST, and Latagan, a regional staff of the same alliance, were illegally arrested last 07 February 2012 in Baranggay Maitim, Bay, Laguna by suspected elements of the police and military from the 202nd Infantry Brigade and 22nd military intelligence company.

Press Release | ‘Occupy Mendiola’ dispersal on human rights week exposes Aquino’s fascism
Human rights advocates in Southern Tagalog (ST) headed by Karapatan-ST expressed condemnation to yesterday’s brutal dispersal by police forces of mostly youth protesters geared for “Occupy Mendiola”.
“It is ironic for such a clear-cut violation of human rights to happen exactly during the Human Rights week and days before our commemoration of United Nation’s International Declaration of Human Rights,” Glen Malabanan, deputy secretary general of Karapatan-ST stressed. She said that this only shows how the Aquino government blatantly disrespects the people’s just demands and is no different from the previous Arroyo administration’s use of state fascism as the only answer to the people’s grievances.
